Match the hatch!
Bass can be finicky feeders, so experienced anglers usually carry hundreds of lures and baits in different colors, patterns and sizes. Most of these anglers try to follow the traditional fly fisherman's mantra: they "Match the Hatch." In simple terms, find lures and patterns that mimic the bass' primary forage base in a particular water. For example, on a lake where bass feed on bluegill, a Purty Perch pattern can be effective, whereas a Blackback Jack color scheme best suits areas where bass feed on shad.
In clear or calm water situations, try using realistic patterns that Match the Hatch. In murky or rippled water, dark, high-contrast and neon patterns are often effective. The best approach is to constantly switch patterns throughout your fishing day until you find ones bass will hit.
